Pick any human act — a stranger pulled from traffic, a village burned to the ground — and Robert Sapolsky, a Stanford neurobiologist, wants to know what caused it. Not the single tidy reason, but every layer at once: the neurons that fired a second before, the hormones circulating that week, the childhood and the womb, the genes, the culture, the ecology stretching back generations. Boiled down to one phrase, his answer is “it’s complicated.” Nothing causes anything by itself; everything just modulates something else. That sounds like a shrug until you follow it to the end, where it quietly dismantles the case for punishing people at all.

Nothing causes anything by itself

Behavior runs through the brain, but the brain is not a lone author. The amygdala handles fear and aggression; its default is to trust, and it learns vigilance only when the world teaches it to. The frontal cortex handles the hard part — it “makes you do the harder thing when it’s the right thing to do.” Damage the hardware and the person changes. Charles Whitman committed mass murder, and his autopsy found a tumor pressing on his amygdala. Phineas Gage took a rod through the frontal cortex and turned profane and impulsive. Many violent criminals show damaged or underactive frontal cortices. Yet the same brain is easily nudged from outside: a face, a skin color, a piece of music can trip unconscious bias, which is part of why Black defendants draw longer sentences for the same crime.

Hormones and genes amplify, they don’t command

The popular story gets the direction wrong. Testosterone doesn’t invent aggression; it turns up the volume on aggression that’s already there. Oxytocin only boosts trust when other people are physically present. Hormones lower thresholds and magnify existing tendencies — they don’t hand you a script. Genes behave the same way. Genetic determinism is a myth: the MAO-A “warrior gene” predicts adult antisocial behavior only when it’s paired with a history of severe childhood abuse. On its own, it stays silent. Genes don’t act autonomously; the environment switches them on and off.

Childhood and culture build the brain

Early life leaves permanent marks. By age five, the lower a child’s socioeconomic status, the thinner the frontal cortex and the poorer its function. A third of adults who were abused as children go on to abuse. Prenatal conditions and early environment reshape the adult brain before you have any say in it. And the frontal cortex is the last region to mature, finishing in the mid-twenties — which explains adolescent volatility, risk-taking, and fierce peer conformity, and means those years get sculpted by experience more than by genes.

Culture is another layer stacked on biology, and it moves the numbers enormously. Someone in Honduras is 450 times more likely to be murdered than someone in Singapore; 65 percent of women in Central Africa face intimate-partner violence, against 16 percent in East Asia. These are cultural facts, not genetic ones, and they trace back to how societies made their living. Rice farming demanded communal labor, which grew collectivist cultures that prize the group over the individual. Steep income inequality corrodes social cohesion. Biology and culture co-evolve, each bending the other.

The tribal brain

We sort the world, automatically and instantly, into Us and Them, inflating the merits of Us and exaggerating the faults of Them — though the categories turn out to be surprisingly easy to redraw. Oscar Wilde caught the cheap version: “Morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people whom we personally dislike.” Our moral brains evolved to spread genes, not to maximize collective happiness, so gut judgments often ignore the utilitarian math. Add our reflex to obey authority and things go dark fast — Milgram’s subjects delivered shocks on command, and Stanford students abused prisoners once handed the power. Demagogues exploit the insular cortex, which processes rotten food and moral disgust alike, by casting enemies as vermin or disease, the pseudospeciation that clears a path to genocide. It helps to remember that empathy and compassion aren’t the same: empathy makes you feel another’s pain and can curdle into self-protective anxiety, while compassion actually moves you to help.

Free will is the real illusion

Here is where it bites. Most of us grant that talent is biological but insist effort is a free choice — that willpower is the part we author ourselves. Sapolsky calls that the destructive myth. Your capacity for self-control and hard work is as biologically determined as your reflexes and your gifts. Praising a child for effort still beats praising raw ability, but even effort has roots you didn’t plant. And if behavior is the sum of causes reaching back before your birth, free will is an illusion — which makes retributive punishment, the kind that assumes someone freely chose to do wrong, indefensible. A justice system built on that assumption needs rethinking.

That’s not a counsel of despair. Humanity has grown markedly less violent over time, and individual choices still change outcomes. In 1968 the U.S. Army pilot Hugh Thompson Jr. ended the My Lai massacre by landing his helicopter between American soldiers and fleeing civilians and ordering his crew to fire on their own troops if the killing continued. Hatred is exhausting; forgiveness, or even indifference, is freeing.

The bottom line

Human behavior has no single cause — it’s neurons, hormones, childhood, genes, and culture endlessly modulating one another, which is why “it’s complicated” is the only honest verdict. Held seriously, that complexity should make you slower to judge and quicker to reform, and no less compassionate for being scientific.
