Oscar Wilde caught the cheap version: “Morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people whom we personally dislike.” Our moral brains evolved to spread genes, not to maximize collective happiness, so gut judgments often ignore the utilitarian math. Add our reflex to obey authority and things go dark fast — Milgram’s subjects delivered shocks on command, and Stanford students abused prisoners once handed the power. Demagogues exploit the insular cortex, which processes rotten food and moral disgust alike, by casting enemies as vermin or disease, the pseudospeciation that clears a path to genocide. It helps to remember that empathy and compassion aren’t the same: empathy makes you feel another’s pain and can curdle into self-protective anxiety, while compassion actually moves you to help.

Free will is the real illusion

Here is where it bites. Most of us grant that talent is biological but insist effort is a free choice — that willpower is the part we author ourselves. Sapolsky calls that the destructive myth. Your capacity for self-control and hard work is as biologically determined as your reflexes and your gifts. Praising a child for effort still beats praising raw ability, but even effort has roots you didn’t plant. And if behavior is the sum of causes reaching back before your birth, free will is an illusion — which makes retributive punishment, the kind that assumes someone freely chose to do wrong, indefensible. That’s not a counsel of despair. Humanity has grown markedly less violent over time, and individual choices still change outcomes. Hatred is exhausting; forgiveness, or even indifference, is freeing.

The interaction holds in men. A meta-analysis of 27 studies found that across 20 male cohorts, early adversity predicted antisocial outcomes more strongly in low-activity MAO-A carriers, and the effect was strongest when the adversity was maltreatment specifically (p = .00000082). Across 11 female cohorts there was no such interaction, and maltreatment predicted antisocial behavior weakly in women with the high-activity genotype instead, the opposite pattern. The wider field this finding belongs to also has a thin replication record: of 103 candidate gene-by-environment studies published from 2000 to 2009, 96% of novel findings were positive against 27% of replication attempts.

Contradicted

In the Stanford prison experiment, ordinary students spontaneously turned abusive once they were handed power over prisoners.

The cruelty was not spontaneous. Archival work on the study's own tapes and notes, plus interviews with participants, found that guards were given precise instructions about how to treat prisoners and were coached toward harshness rather than arriving at it themselves. Guards were also never told they were experimental subjects, participants were rarely fully immersed in the scenario, and the data collection was biased and incomplete. The demonstration that situations override character does not survive as the study described it, though Milgram's obedience findings, which the summary cites alongside it, rest on firmer ground.

The link is real but the rate is not settled. A meta-analysis of 84 studies and 285 effect sizes found a medium association (r = 0.289) with maltreated parents about three times as likely to maltreat, while cautioning that bias indicators and uneven study quality make the number hard to pin down. A 30-year prospective follow-up found the apparent transmission depends heavily on who is reporting: adults with documented childhood abuse drew more child protective services reports than matched comparisons but did not self-report more physical or sexual abuse, suggesting surveillance bias inflates the official figures.
