In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, the mayor of Jerusalem, sent a letter warning that the Zionist movement’s plan for a Jewish national home in Palestine would meet resistance from the people already living there. He closed with a plea: “in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone.” The author of this book is his great-great-nephew, and he uses that unheeded warning to open a century-long history. Rashid Khalidi’s central claim is that what followed was not a symmetrical clash of two national movements but a settler-colonial project — sponsored first by Britain and later by the United States, in which Palestinians were denied political recognition at every turn. Under Ottoman rule, Arabs made up 94% of Palestine’s population; Khalidi traces how that majority lost its standing, drawing throughout on his own family’s documents and experience.
